RDE-AES Analysis Part 2

Part 2: Target Analytes of RDE-AES Used Oil Testing

Accurate identification and quantitative detection of trace substances in used lubricating and hydraulic oils are the core basis for evaluating equipment operating status and oil deterioration. As a professional oil spectrum analysis technology, RDE-AES can synchronously detect wear metals, external contaminants and additive residual elements in oil fluids, covering all key monitoring indicators for industrial oil management. This article will elaborate on the detailed detection indicators and standard ASTM D6595 operating procedures of RDE-AES.

Key Detection Substances of RDE-AES

The detection range of RDE-AES covers three major categories of elements, which jointly reflect equipment wear degree, external pollution status and oil performance attenuation, realizing comprehensive health assessment of oil systems.

1. Equipment Wear Metals

Wear metals are tiny metal particles peeled off from mechanical friction pairs during equipment operation, which are the most direct indicators for judging abnormal component wear and potential mechanical faults. The main detectable elements include Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Aluminum (Al), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), Tin (Sn), Nickel (Ni), Manganese (Mn), Titanium (Ti) and Silver (Ag).

These elements correspond to core wearing parts in industrial equipment: Fe mainly comes from cylinder liners, piston rings and steel gears; Cu and Pb are typical wear elements of bearings and bushings; Al is derived from alloy pistons and pump casings. Abnormal increases in these elements directly indicate excessive friction or component damage.

2. External Contaminants

External contaminants invade the oil system through the operating environment or equipment leakage, which will accelerate oil deterioration, block pipelines and cause system failure. RDE-AES accurately captures common pollutant elements:

Silicon (Si) mainly originates from ambient dust, sand and abrasive impurities, indicating poor sealing of the equipment system; Sodium (Na), Potassium (K) and Boron (B) are characteristic elements of coolant and antifreeze leakage, serving as key evidence for judging liquid mixing failure; Calcium and Magnesium impurities are usually mixed with moisture and sediments, reflecting system moisture contamination.

3. Additive Residual Elements

Industrial lubricating and hydraulic oils contain a variety of functional additives to ensure extreme pressure wear resistance, oxidation resistance and cleaning performance. RDE-AES detects residual additive elements including Zinc (Zn), Phosphorus (P), Calcium (Ca), Molybdenum (Mo) and Barium (Ba).

The continuous consumption of these elements means the gradual failure of oil functional performance. When the additive content drops below the standard threshold, the oil will lose its protective effect, and equipment wear and oxidation aging will be significantly accelerated.

4. Effective Detection Particle Size Range

RDE-AES has optimal detection performance for dissolved metal elements and fine suspended particles ≤10 μm in oil samples, which covers most trace harmful substances in conventional used oil and meets the daily monitoring needs of industrial systems.
